Join us on a scenic journey along the Panlongshan section of the Gubeikou Great Wall, one of the most historic and less-crowded parts of the Wall. This hike takes you up to the iconic 24-Eyes Tower, across ancient battlements, and down toward the imposing North Gate, with sweeping views the whole way. To complete the adventure, we’ll enjoy a hearty countryside lunch in a local village.
Hike Overview
Our walk begins near a quiet hamlet at the foot of the Wall. From here, we follow a valley trail up to a small reservoir, where a hillside path leads us directly onto the Great Wall. The climb is steady but not too challenging, and you’ll soon find yourself standing near one of the highest points of today’s trek.
At the very top stands the legendary 24-Eyes Tower. Originally featuring six windows on each side, this tower gave soldiers a wide vantage point over the mountains and valleys. Though damaged during battles in the 1930s, including heavy fighting with Japanese forces, the tower still commands breathtaking panoramas and is the highlight of this section.
From the 24-Eyes Tower, the Wall winds down toward the North Gate. Along the way we pass through several notable watchtowers, including the Haowang Tower and the General’s Tower. Shortly after, we leave the Wall for a short stretch along hill trails before rejoining the fortifications that once surrounded Gubeikou Village. Our hike concludes at the North Gate, an arched stone gateway that has guarded this pass for centuries.
After descending into the village, we’ll celebrate the end of the hike with a delicious country-style meal prepared by local residents.
